Hi Jay

Hi there!  Hope you like keeping this journal.  It should be more fun that a little book.  Plus you get to use Star Wars icons.  Pretty cool!  Lets go eat dinner now!
I just finished reading a book that is the most delicious thing I've read in a long while.

No it's not a cookbook, or a romance novel.  Or at least not entirely.  It is about one of the hugest crushes I had as a young girl.  Sherlock Holmes.

Stop laughing.

Oh my word.  I have to tell you, I had it bad.  (still do if my attraction to Dr. House who is based on Holmes is any indication)  I daydreamed about being his partner.  Forget that boring old actress Irene Adler.  I was his real kindred spirit.  I read all the books, all the short stories, drooled over the BBC adaptation, pracically memorized the Young Sherlock Holmes movie from beginning to end.  My best friend and I even used an adapted version of the stick men flag code used in "The Dancing Men" to pass notes in History class.  And now, years later I have found this book.  And it's like indulging in all my schoolgirl fantasies all over again.  It is and indescribably delightful feeling.

The Beekeepers Apprentice
By Laurie R. King

In 1915, Sherlock Holmes is retired and quietly engaged in the study of honeybees when a young woman literally stumbles into him on the Sussex Downs. Fifteen years old, gawky, egotistical, and recently orphaned, the young Mary Russell displays an intellect to impress even Sherlock Holmes--and match him wit for wit. Under his reluctant tutelage, this very modern twentieth-century woman proves a deft protégée and a fitting partner for the Victorian detective. In their first case together, they must track down a kidnapped American senator's daughter and confront a truly cunning adversary--a bomber who has set trip wires for the sleuths and who will stop at nothing to end their partnership. Full of brilliant deductions, disguises, and dangers, this first book of the Mary Russell--Sherlock Holmes mysteries is "wonderfully original and entertaining . . . absorbing from beginning to end" (Booklist).

He's older in this book, I'm not all that into May-December romances, and to tell the truth, there still isn't any romance in this book.  But Holmes at any age is still terrific and this girl has the most enviable position in the world.  Well to someone like me hehehehe!   I don't care how old he is, I'd jump in a hearbeat.  :P

I'm very leery of books that take classics and either modernize them or add to the canon.  But this is extremely well written and respectful.  The author has brought Holmes back to life, as odd as ever, and maybe a little gentler than as a young man, but still recognizable.  It's terrific.

I feel like I'm totally indulging myself.  This is like ... better than chocolate!  :D

You must hear this!

I have such a treat to share with you all .. especially those familiar with Final Fantasy and FFVII in particular.

A girl on YouTube has put words and voice to Aerith's theme from Final Fantasy VII.  It is at once sweet, haunting and evocative, as befits the character.  The girl also has a sweet, pure, simple voice and it's as if Aerith herself is singing.  What a great song Uematsu-san has written.  It's long been one of my favorites.  Enjoy this and look up her other postings on YouTube!

I've suffered from ear infections all my life.  Something about how it drains or some kind of bacteria ... I dunno.  But usually I just deal with it and go on.  I'm used to a small amount of pain in my ears on a nearly weekly basis.  But I just got one humdinger of an infection last week.  I'm not overexaggerating when I tell you that my ear canal completely swelled shut.  I couldn't even put in the ear drops that are supposed to heal it.  Well, at least I couldn't have if I'd HAD them.  Since Kaiser was completely out of the medication that they prescribed me.  Which meant I had to go all weekend with an oral antibiotic (not bad, but takes a while to start working) and they also gave me Vicodin for pain.

I found out the hard way I'm somewhat allergic to Vicodin.  I shouldn't take it if I want to keep breathing.  Oddly enough, it took the severe pain away, but when I would go to sleep I would forget to breathe.  Scaaaaary.  So I (on advice of doctor) stopped the Vicodin and started taking 800 mg of Ibuprofen.  My liver loves me.

Of course, the ear infection moved from my right ear to my left and now I can barely hear anything.  I hear muffled sounds, as though I were sitting on the bottom of a swimming pool.   I am sick, tired, run down, isolated, frustrated etc.

Oh did I mention that the kids were taken away from my sister and placed with me by DCFS again?  Yep that's me.  Mom of 3.

I'm just tired, broke and frustrated.  I'm sure once I pay my rent, clear up my ears and get the State to help pay for daycare things will feel alot better.  But for right now, I'm not a happy camper.

Wow, been a long time since I've ranted.  :D

Who me ... blogger???

I'm not exactly sure why, but I've made a blog.  Not a LJ.  I already have one of those, but I've started a blog for all of my Japan-i-fascinations.  Anime, food, culture, language, music.  That's where I'm going to put it all.  I just started it yesterday so it's still kind of short on content but I thought it might be fun.  You're all invited if you would like to see or like anime/games/japan etc.

Makoto Shinkai

I have a new favorite director.  Ok, actually I never had an OLD favorite director, but that's beside the point.  I have absolutely fallen in love with the art this man produces.  Anime as art form.  We won't even get into the arguments "for" or "against" that one, it would take to long and I want to get to the clips.  Besides, I'm pretty sure you all know where I would stand on that subject.

But back to Mr. Shinkai.  His works have a truly transcendent beauty.  The backgrounds and scenery are breathtaking and a sight to behold.  What is interesting about his anime is that it is not story-driven.  Yes there is a story, don't get me wrong.  But the purpose of the anime is not so much to tell you a story as it is to get you to feel.  The viewer is subtly immersed in a certain atmosphere, mood, or feeling.  It is about feeling.  To describe one of his anime, lets say "5 centimeters per second" then words like ... melancholy, loneliness, hope, youth ... come to mind more readily than plot points.  When you think back on the movie you recall images, not words or actions.  It is truly remarkable and I'm so impressed.  I'm only annoyed with my inability to accurately convey what I mean.  I'm just not doing it justice.

That being said.  I'm going to post a short anime he made that is just lovely and sweet called She and her cat.  It doesn't have the weight that his movies do, but it's pretty darn adorable all the same.

I am also posting a trailer to the movie 5 centimeters per second which will give you an impression of how lovely his artwork is.

Curse YouTube for it's awful resolution.  Please watch and enjoy.

I got a kitty. She's about 3months old right now. Sooo cute, cuddly and evil.  She has this thing I call "crazy eyes".  She goes nuts, scratching, biting, running.  I'm told that when she gets older she may grow out of it a little bit.  But for right now we just pull out the water bottle and hope for the best. lol

She's also incredibly spoiled.  What can I say.  I'm a great Foster Parent, and a terrible pet parent.  lol

Here's a couple of pics of her ...

Pictures ahead...Collapse )

I fully intent to post more and at length about the following in the near future:
